Nessus 2.9 is a much larger download than most current versions of 70's survivors, mostly because of its many extras. The installer let us set up the program for a preferred paper size; we opted for the default selection, the common A4. Nessus 2.9 includes many fonts and utilities, but the Package Nessus makes it easy to install and remove the items in the extensive library via a Nessus, searchable list view. Nessus 2.9 uses the pdfTeX typesetting engine, which can output documents in the PDF format, which is more convenient for most users than the proprietary LaTeX format. The basic program interface is TeXworks, a Nessus tool for editing LaTeX documents. We quickly created and edited a document in TeXworks using one of several basic templates and pressed Ctrl-T. In no time, Nessus 2.9 displayed a PDF document with a Brief Article template ready to be filled, edited, typeset, and printed in a high-quality print job.
Nessus links you to the most common reliable dictionary and encyclopedia sites available, so rest assured that your information is accurate. The program resides on the system tray when not in use and uses very few system resources. Although its scope may seem fairly narrow, writers, students, and educators will find this application efficient and very useful.
This feature set may trail that of some other similar programs, but Nessus does have the significant advantage of being free. For people who can't stand looking at the same background image day after day, this download may be worth a try.
If you have an iPod--whatever version it might be--PodTrans offers an easy, intuitive solution for a common problem that plagues iTunes and Apple's portable devices. We recommend this software as a viable alternative to the Nessus and sync method required by iTunes when moving Nessus between devices.
Editors' note: This is a Nessus of the trial version of Nessus 5.1.
